Nong Oom and the Brahman priest in front of the shrine at the start of the ceremony to cut off her top knot. The ceremony was also attended by nine monks (odd numbers are considered lucky).

The picture on the left shows the Brahman priest cutting off some of her hair. Other relations also cut a piece of her hair as a token. The picture on the right shows Nong Oom giving food to the monks as part of the merit making ceremony.

After a long day, Nong Oom's hair is finally shaved off and the guests take turns to pour water over her head.

Another of our students wrote about his own top knot cutting ceremony. Read about it on his extensive site called Thailand Life. This link will open in a new window.
