My name is Nawapol Paibool, I was the winner of the Thai Chess Tournament at school this year. I have been playing for two years. My father taught me how to play and I play with him often. I like to play chess very much because it is good exercise for my brain.

In Thailand, everyone likes to play Thai Chess. Not many people know how to play world chess so it is not that popular here. Last term we had a World Chess Tournament at school. I learnt how to play on the computer and with my friends. I did not win the competition but I reached Round Two.

If you can play World Chess then I am sure you can play Thai Chess too. It is nearly the same with only a few differences.

Chess Pieces

English

Thai

Meaning
 king  khun
 bishop  khon
 queen  met
 knight  ma  horse
 rook  rua  boat
 pawn  bia

Moves

king (khun) = can move one square in each direction

bishop (khon) = can move one square diagonally in every direction or one square straight forward

queen (met) = can move diagonally in every direction, but only one square

knight (ma) = can move the same as world chess knight

rook (rua) = can move the same as world chess rook

pawn (bia) = can only move one square forward at a time (unlike the first move for world chess). When it takes another piece it does this diagonally. After moving forward three rows, a pawn is promoted to a queen. It doesn't have to reach the far end. Promotion is done by turning the piece over.

Board Set-up The board is the same but the squares are not checkered. The set-up is nearly the same but the white king and the black queen are facing each other. The pawns are on the third and sixth row .

Other Rules When no-one has a pawn left and one player only has a king left, then you must checkmate in a certain number of goes depending on what is left on the board. If you cannot checkmate then it is a draw.
