Pets' Corner

The most popular location in our school is Pet's Corner. Here we have a variety of animals which the students can stroke and feed. We have rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, terrapins, fish, birds and a squirrel. Early in the morning, before school starts, is feeding time. Some teachers and students bring to school, grass, carrots and other vegetables for the pet animals. These they share out among their friends so that everyone can have a chance of feeding the animals.

Our pets are probably the most fed and looked after animals in Thailand. They get constant attention from the students throughout the day. Whenever students pass Pet's Corner, they always stop to say "hello" or to stroke the animals.

The pet animals are not only here for the enjoyment of the students. There is also an educational aspect to it. The teachers, within their own lessons refer to the pets as a practical example to what the students are learning in their text books. Throughout the year, we breed the pets so that the students can see first hand new born babies. The students are also given an opportunity to compare the gestation period of different animals. Recently (June 18th 1998), the female hamster gave birth to 6 babies. In the time leading up to this we told the students that the gestation period for hamsters is only 16 days and is the shortest of all the animals. The students also had a chance to take a look at the new born babies as well.
