| Quite a large part of the local community are of Chinese descent. You probably notice this more so during the Chinese New Year celebrations when firecrackers are set off continuously during the day and many of the local shops are closed. The above pictures, taken by one of our students, Nattawud Daoruang, shows one of our local shrines. This one, on Phrkhonchai Road, also doubles as the City Pillar Shrine. This is the foundation stone for our city. So really, not only Chinese people come to this temple. Outside, you can see the usual vendors selling lottery tickets and jasmine garlands. | ||

| Inside the courtyard, there is a shrine where people offer food and drinks to their dead ancestors. There is also an incinerator for burning paper representations of money, gold and even clothes. These are offerings for the dead ancestors. | ||

| Outside many Buddhist temples you will see caged animals such as birds and terrapins. Thai people buy these and then set them free (see last picture). The idea is that they are making merit for themselves by doing this. | ||

| These pictures show the inside of a Chinese temple. Notice the colours red and yellow are used often and the dragon bas reliefs. You quite often see images of Buddha, though unlike the Thai versions, these ones are fatter with a large belly. | ||
