The King's birthday on 5th December is also celebrated as Father's Day as the King is regarded as a Father to all Thai people. At school we held a special ceremony to commemorate this event. The school principal first paid homage to a picture of the King. Then 22 teachers were presented with the Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Admirable Order of the Dierekgunabhorn. Click here for a bigger picture of the teachers. At the end of the ceremony, students went out into the neighbouring roads to clean up the rubbish.

During the ceremony, everyone was entertained by some Thai dancing.

The King's birthday is a public holiday. The following two diary entries were written by our Primary 6 students and shows what they did on that day.

"Father's Day is on 5th December every year. Father's Day is also the King's birthday. In the morning the King makes merit. In the evening the people pay homage to the King. On that day people decorate their houses with flags and pictures of the King. The special flower on Father's Day is canna. Today, I got up at 6.45 a.m. I took a bath, ate breakfast and watched television. I made a card for my father and gave it to him. My sister gave canna flowers to him. I played some computer games and then in the afternoon I went to the supermarket with my family. We went back home at 4 p.m. I played games, watched tv and then ate dinner. At 9 p.m. I went to my bedroom. I sang a song. Then I slept." - Kanista Chokae

"I got up at 6 a.m. I took a bath and brushed my teeth. After, I helped my mother cook. Then, my brother and I gave a flower garland to our father. We then all went to Central City Department Store. We ate at 13 Coins restaurant. We then played in Leoland. It was very fun. At 6.30 p.m. we went home. I ate dinner with my family. I watched television and then took a bath. Next, my family and I payed homage to the King. Then I went to bed happily." - Chutima Tanjantaporn
